Future of Coleraine’s Senior Common Room in doubt
News that that the future of the Senior Common Room (SCR) on Coleraine campus is in jeopardy has been greated with dismay by UCU. A spokesperson for the union said, “The VC’s refusal to let the relocated SCR serve food and drink to its members and guests, as the SCR Chair says, is effectively a notice of closure. As such it represents a regrettable and unnecessary removal of a vital facility and important social hub for staff and visitors to the Campus.
“The rationale offered for the closure is not convincing. Unlike Magee and Belfast, Coleraine campus is over a mile from any urban centre and does not have easy access to any alternative commercial catering outlets. Given that no alternative facilities can be found within a mile of the campus it is disingenuous to cite notions of parity.
“Staff are also now being deprived of any means to entertain visiting lecturers or external examiners.
“Overall the decision will have a significant detrimental effect on the morale and wellbeing of staff and will make the campus considerably less attractive to visitors.”
UCU’s spokeperson said, “We are concerned about the ongoing reduction in staff services and facilities across all campuses of the university.”
